Vitamin D information

Vitamin D is indispensable to good health. Most Europeans receive too little vitamin D, especially during winter months, because sunlight contains little UV light in that period of the year. Health studies worldwide has proved how essential the role of vitamin D is in prevention:
  • on cell level: breast cancer, colon cancer and prostate cancer
  • on bone level: osteoporosis, osteomalacia and femur neck fracture
  • on organ level: high blood pressure, hypertension and heart diseases
  • on mental level: SAD, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), depression and general well-being
  • autoimmune diseases: multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis
  • skin diseases: e.g. psoriasis
  • nutritional problems
Sunlight is the most natural and effective source of vitamin D

Physicists and scientists widely accept the fact that human beings derive 90% of natural vitamin D from sunlight through their skin. Man is “designed” to gain only 10 percent of it by nutrition; therefore, sunlight is vital in producing vitamin D which is so necessary.

Nowadays most of us live in artificial light and do not enjoy sunlight like our ancestors did, who worked a lot in open air. This way of life does not favour maintaining the optimal level of vitamin D and building vitamin D stocks which can last through winter months without sunlight. Since our way of life has changed, most of us lack the necessary level of vitamin D even during spring and summer, not to mention the winter stocks. That's why renowned experts of vitamin D advise us to sunbathe or go to tanning salons for a reasonable degree of tanning at least twice a week.
